30-Second Overview: Whyte (real name Lin Zhiyi, born 1994, from Hsinchu Xiangshan) won the Best New Artist award at the 32nd Golden Melody Awards on August 21, 20211. On the same night, Hebe Tien won Best Female Artist, and Doggy won Best Male Artist. What made Whyte's speech go viral was her words to the national audience: "Please don't be afraid."2 She stated on stage: graduated from Hsinchu Girls' High School, entered the Department of Medicine at the Medical College of the National Defense Medical University and studied for nine years (including one year of suspension in her junior year, including one year of delayed graduation; the originally two-year internship took three years because she did not follow doctors for consultations), completed intern physician training, and obtained a Bachelor of Medicine degree3. On the track where Taiwan's best students compete, she pressed the pause button midway: first, the year of suspension where she worked three jobs a day4, then released her first song "Cazzo" in 20195, released A Bedroom of One's Own in 20206, and when she won the award, she was still wearing a mask in the operating room as an intern physician during the day7. Then she didn't go back to be a doctor.
"Please Don't Be Afraid": The Words on the Golden Melody Stage
On the evening of August 21, 2021, Taipei Small Giants Dome. The 32nd Golden Melody Awards Ceremony.
Whyte walked on stage to accept the Best New Artist award. She wore a black suit jacket, a black hat, and sunglasses—this was her standard attire for a whole year since her debut, never letting the media capture her true face8.
She said a few words to the camera:
✦ "I am the kind of student who constantly runs forward within the system, graduating only last year, I just left that system. When I was confused at 20 years old, feeling trapped, I chose to suspend my studies and stop to listen to my own heart. It was a decision others didn't understand, but looking back after 5 years, that stagnant time was the beginning of my change. I have experienced it myself, please don't be afraid, bravely look at your own inner needs, you can too."2
The winner list that night was unusually long. The Best Female Artist was Hebe Tien9, the Best Male Artist was Doggy, and the Album of the Year was Sangpu'i1. Best New Artist was a girl who had just obtained a Bachelor of Medicine degree and was still wearing a mask in the operating room as an intern physician during the day3.
📝 Curator's Note
Best New Artist at the Golden Melody Awards is one of the most capitalized awards in the Taiwan music industry. The winner is usually someone who has already decided to pursue music, pushed by the label for years, and targeted as a newcomer within one or two years of debut. Whyte's winning image is very contrasting: she had only been debuting for two years, released two or three songs, her label was the independent ChynaHouse, and she hadn't even resigned from her hospital internship by the time she won the award. She skipped thanking the management company, skipped thanking her family, and said a phrase: "Please don't be afraid." She was speaking to those on the other side of the screen who are trapped by the system, want to stop but dare not.
The Father Filled Out the Medical School Application
To understand Whyte's "Please don't be afraid," we must start with the choices she didn't make.
She was born on June 19, 1994, in Hsinchu Xiangshan District10. There were three children in the family, and the economic pressure was significant. In the living room, three layers of sound were resonating simultaneously: her father listening to Wang Li-you's old Taiwanese songs, her mother listening to Chen Shuhua's Mandarin ballads, and she herself listening to Jacky Cheung and Jacky Cheung3 by sticking close to the CD player. The family couldn't afford piano lessons, and finally bought an electronic keyboard in a large supermarket where the screen would jump with dynamic sheet music. She had no teacher, following the jumping instructions on the screen to press the keys, and mastered "Canon" and "Minuet" two pieces3. She described that time to interviewers: "I was very small then, but I could remember and sing every note."3
She attended Hsinchu Girls' High School11, one of the schools where the best students in Taiwan are heavily concentrated. But her true motivation for studying was quite different from the imagination of typical honor students. She explained her situation in elementary school in an interview with Zheng Yinong in February 2024:
✦ "The teachers I met at that time had more traditional ideas. He would say girls should grow up, girls cannot be class monitors, and he told me directly because boys speak better... My most impressive memory is when I said, 'Teacher, sorry, my period came, I want to rest today,' and the teacher said, 'How can you say the word 'period' in the presence of others? Girls should know this is shameful, you cannot say it.'"12
She didn't follow the rules, but instead took them apart to look at. She realized that as long as she studied well, the teachers wouldn't see her as a girl, but as a "top three student."
✦ "When I study, I seem to find a path that allows me to go up, and people won't look at whether I am a boy or a girl, as long as I am in the top three, the teacher will notice."12
Studying was her escape route. From childhood to adulthood, she relied on this path, from a small school by the sea in Xiangshan all the way to Hsinchu Girls' High School, and then let her father fill out the application:
✦ "Even the university application form was filled out by my father. I had no imagination for the future, I didn't even know which departments he finally registered me for."13
She finally entered the Department of Medicine at the Medical College of the National Defense Medical University13. She later described her state at that time in another interview:
✦ "I was like a steamed bun, letting the adults mold me into the shape they wanted. Even my university application was filled out by my family."14
📝 Curator's Note
"Father filling out the application" is not uncommon in Taiwan's honor student families. Many girls are pushed up from Hsinchu Girls' High School / North一女 / Zhongshan Girls' High School, finally landing in medical schools or popular departments at NTU, NCTU, or NTHU. Whyte's特殊性 lies in the fact that her motivation for studying has carried a sense of rebellion from the beginning: she studied to not be seen as a girl. By the time she pressed the pause button at the student meeting in her junior year, she was actually pressing a series of arrangements given to her by the system, from the elementary school teacher to her father filling out the application.
The Student Meeting in Junior Year
When did she press the pause button? At a student meeting at the end of her sophomore year, during her junior year.
She said nothing dramatic happened at that meeting. But sitting in the meeting, she suddenly realized she had "always been at school"—from kindergarten to university, never leaving the classroom. She began to feel anxious, to the point where she couldn't continue14.
✦ "I have never been abroad since I was a child, a girl who came up under Taiwan's education system. I thought, oh god, I will just live like this, open my eyes and I will be thirty years old, my path is already very certain."5
She decided to take a year off. Her parents opposed it. She still took a year off4.
✦ "I am unhappy, I am not happy, I feel trapped by something, I cannot continue. What binds me is my own mindset, I can only stop first and go find myself."14
That year she was 20 years old.
The Year of Three Jobs
Students who take a year off usually go abroad, take a gap year, or travel. She didn't have money to go abroad.
What she did was more concrete:
✦ "In the morning, I make drinks in a coffee shop; in the afternoon, I cut desserts in a cake shop; in the evening, I run errands and buy bento boxes for people in a recording studio."4
Three jobs a day.
The last job, "buying bento boxes in the recording studio," caught her. She watched others record vocals in the corner of the recording studio, watched how adults make music, and signed up for guitar lessons herself. She wasn't going to learn from a master, but to learn the tools for writing songs5.
The guitar teacher was Teacher Li Qixian15. Teacher Li didn't start teaching from chord charts, but "started from principles, leading me to listen to music, catch songs, and practice ear and finger techniques." It was also Teacher Li who put French jazz singer Cyrille Aimée and British soul singer Adele on her playlist15. She was particularly fascinated by Cyrille Aimée's scat singing, and later she covered Cyrille Aimée and guitarist Diego Figueiredo's version of "Just the Two of Us"16. She listened along, caught harmonies along, and entered that lo-fi R&B and jazz female vocal context. She didn't mention this on the Golden Melody stage, but this was her true musical enlightenment window.
There were a few years of low points where she swung between medical school and music. She once sent a message to Li Qixian asking, "What is the meaning of living?" After she won the award, Teacher Li told her:
✦ "Good thing you didn't think of ending it then, otherwise there would be no Whyte today, life is very fun!"15
📝 Curator's Note
She never had a dramatic scene of "deciding to become a musician." No sudden enlightenment, no great realization. Just a girl running errands and buying bento boxes in the corner of the recording studio watching adults work, and then learning jazz from a guitar teacher who "started from principles." The turning point in Taiwan's honor student narrative is usually a grand decision, but her turning point was carrying bento boxes, listening to Cyrille Aimée, and a message sent to the teacher on a low night.
After a year of suspension, she went back to finish medical school. But the person who went back was already different. In the last few years of school, she began to accumulate her own songs simultaneously.
"Cazzo" and _A Bedroom of One's Own_
Her first song was not planned out.
At some point, she joined the NTU Jazz Society and met senior student Tower da Funkmasta (Tao Yiqun)3. She sent a demo to Tower inviting him to perform, but Tower didn't respond, and those files lay in his hard drive for a while. Later, Tower reopened them, looked for her again to make an album.
On June 28, 2019, she released her first song "Cazzo" under the name "?te" on the ChynaHouse label and YouTube5. Cazzo is an Italian swear word. The lyrics describe a girl waking up and regretting the warmth of a night based on alcohol, "this familiar story, played out every night in different cities"16. On the day of recording, she brought an old guitar, constantly hitting the strings while playing, and the pitch was not accurate. Tower had a change of heart, directly incorporating the noise and ambient sounds into the recording, and mixing in samples from old Italian movies16. This was the starting point of her entire debut album's lo-fi aesthetic.
The stage name "?te" sounds like "white" when connected; the Chinese "Whyte" (Huaitè) means "terribly bad" in Shanghainese. She originally wanted to collaborate with Huang Xuan (YELLOW) on "Cazzo," "his name is yellow, I'll come with a color"17.
A few months later, the second song "Insomnia" became the StreetVoice chart champion the week it was released, accumulating 200,000 views on YouTube within two months18. The lyrics describe insomnia at 5 AM thinking of someone, with the chorus singing the names of six soul singers in alphabetical order to pay tribute to them: Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, Chaka Khan, Duffy, Ella Fitzgerald, Fergie18. She wrote her auditory history directly into this song.
On July 31, 2020, she released her first full-length album A Bedroom of One's Own (A Bedroom of One's Own), and released the physical version on August 286. The album title borrows from Woolf's A Room of One's Own. The entire album was recorded at Tower's home, with Tower's children running around nearby during recording. From the first song to the first album, she fully retained the amateur feel of the bedroom aesthetic6.
Her songwriting method matches the amateur feel of the recording studio: voice memos on her phone record phrases at any time, organized once a month accumulating dozens of audio files, and in three to four hours at Tower's house, she had to piece together a song5. Her English lyrics were not written out of thin air; she would Google strings like "how to name your lover" or "how to call your lover" on her phone,捞 a long list of candidate words back to try singing line by line5.
📝 Curator's Note
What she did from 2019 to 2020 was a path that many new generation female R&B creators of her generation had walked: writing herself, singing herself, bedroom-level production, releasing lyric videos instead of MVs, releasing on SoundCloud and StreetVoice before going to KKBOX and Spotify. She is on a different branch of the same indie ecosystem as 9m88, Zheng Jingru (deca joins), and later [Hello Nico] creators. The global lo-fi wave was also heating up with Joji (Japanese lo-fi R&B representative) and keshi (Korean Texas bedroom pop representative) at the same time. This Taiwan branch bloomed simultaneously with the global. Refer to the context of Taiwan Independent Music where multiple branches bloom simultaneously.
In the last few years of her hospital internship, she also wrote a song called "Seh Ah Seh"19. "Seh" is the romanization of the Taiwanese word "xué" (wander). She wrote this song out of boredom while "aimlessly doing the same work" in the hospital corridors, but the lyrics superficially talk about the fatigue of migrant workers alone after work. She turned the boredom of an intern into the loneliness of a migrant worker. This song later became the track she performed live at the Golden Melody Awards19.
She deliberately avoided showing her face starting from 2020. When the media photographed her, she wore a large straw hat and sunglasses. She said:
✦ "When I first became a singer, I was still interning in the hospital. I wanted to separate music from hospital life."8
In February 2021, Mirror Media followed her and revealed her true face. She later posted a素颜 photo with glasses on Facebook to make it public20. Her handling method was: face it directly.
Hearing Her Own Song in the Operating Room
Her identity that night she won the award was not just a singer. She was a medical student in her seventh year of delayed graduation + an intern physician.
She later said a scene in an interview:
✦ "Really not, I even listened to my own song while assisting the attending physician in the operating room. Because basically in the hospital we wear masks, and during internship we change departments once a month."7
The hospital broadcast played her song. She stood next to the attending physician wearing a mask. No one recognized her.
She completed her intern physician training and obtained a Bachelor of Medicine degree3. She did not continue on the path to become a formal physician.
Shortly after winning the award, questions began to appear online asking "Are you confident letting her perform surgery?", describing her as a medical student who abandoned medicine for dreams and was irresponsible21.
Her response at the time was to keep medicine as an option to "go back in 3 to 6 years"22, but the early stage of music is a golden period and cannot be missed.
📝 Curator's Note
"Abandoning medicine for literature" always triggers a round of old-fashioned discussion in the Chinese-speaking world: Your parents invested 9 years letting you study medicine, should you give up for personal interest? The blind spot of this discussion lies in the fact that it presupposes that "physician" is the final answer to identity, and everything else is capricious. What makes Whyte truly moving is that when she said "please don't be afraid" to the nation, she admitted it was a decision others wouldn't understand. She didn't advise others to become singers, she advised others to listen to themselves.
Taking a Class with Chen Junhao
Winning the Golden Melody Newcomer award, by normal logic, she would enter the mainstream: sign with a major label, appear on variety shows, hold large concerts, accumulate traffic. She did walk this path, but only halfway.
On June 19, 2023, she released her second album "Way out" with Sony Music Taiwan, co-produced by Chen Junhao, with guests including singer Hong Peiyu23. That same year, she won the Best Alternative Pop Album Award at the 14th Golden Indie Music Awards23. In August, she held her first solo large-scale ticketed concert at Zepp New Taipei24. From Golden Melody Newcomer to Golden Indie Winner, from bedroom to Zepp, it looks like a mainstream track.
But the actual work process was not so smooth. She likes the soft sound of jazz and retro sounds, while Chen Junhao wanted her to break through and do a different style. The two pulled back and forth in the recording studio until she couldn't help but ask: "Or should we just finish this song and call it a day?"25 Later, she turned this push-pull into her own lesson. She said to Chen Junhao:
✦ "Brother, this is my life's lesson, are you willing to take it with me?"25
Chen Junhao smiled and replied: "Okay! Let's try! You are like my son!"25
This "taking a class" conversation is more worth remembering than the second album itself. The girl who was told by her father to fill out the application, pushed by the system to run, and told by the teacher "girls shouldn't be class monitors," learned to "negotiate with another person" for the first time in the recording studio, pulling back and forth with a mid-generation producer. "Morning Babe" in the album is the concrete result of their collaboration—she found Hong Peiyu to duet under Chen Junhao's recommendation, "to find a mid-range, granular vocal line for duet," originally a solo version, changed to a duet after discussing the lyrical意境26.
The Breakdown on the Other Side of the Transoceanic Call
On December 28, 2025, she released her third album "Boundary"27. This time she didn't follow the mainstream route, didn't continue to find Taiwanese major label producers, took on A&R herself, fished in the vast playlists of Spotify, and sent out hundreds of cold emails28.
The process was more tiring than she expected. She met an extremely emotionally unstable American musician who called transoceanically late at night to break down and cry, talking about life pressure, forcing her to switch exhaustedly between the identities of "producer" and "psychological counselor"28. She also met collaborators who insisted on their own views and pulled back and forth with her across time zones. She later described what she learned during that time:
✦ "If it were the old me, under this kind of semi-push pressure, I might have just said 'okay okay okay' and done it."28
Over two years, she completed 9 songs with musicians from 11 countries: "Let Me Be Me" by Japanese TENDRE, "Won't Make that Mistake Again" by London-based Nigerian soul singer Steven Bamidele, "Staying Up All Night" by Malaysian babychair, plus collaborations from Brazil, Nigeria, Germany, Italy, and the United States27.
She wrote the contracts herself, serving as both manager and planner, taking back one by one the things she used to hand over to the label29.
In an interview with OPENTIX, she described the role transition from hospital intern to full-time creator:
✦ "Before becoming a music creator, I didn't have many choices, life was all arranged things, morning you have to go to work in the hospital, evening you have to be on duty. During these 3 years as a freelancer, suddenly I have to make decisions for everything myself."30
Her description of another process is more direct:
✦ "In these few years, I have been learning to set my own boundaries, learning to refuse, learning to express discomfort, I slowly no longer escape and accumulate those small emotions."31
📝 Curator's Note
The track of a typical Golden Melody Newcomer is "going more mainstream": first album independent, second album to major label, third album accumulates large concerts. She is exactly the opposite: second album on Sony learned to "take a class" with Chen Junhao, third album returned to self-production, learned to say "I don't want this" to the breakdown American musician on the other side of the transoceanic call. After pressing the first pause button, every choice seems like pressing the second, third, and fourth pause buttons.
The Gender Misogyny Debate in the Hip Hop Circle
After winning the award, she didn't become that kind of Golden Melody Newcomer who only releases new songs and doesn't take a stance.
From late January to mid-February 2025, a gender misogyny debate broke out in the Taiwan hip hop circle, extending from the November 2024 release of "I Really Can't Help It" by the "89 Textbook" group. The chorus "I sit in a Panamera, you are still a 5678 single mom" went viral on Douyin, with basketball cheerleaders following along, singing the mockery of single moms all over the court32. On January 26, Yi Yi posted on IG stories "Hip hop boys wake up! Always worshipping foreign things, look at the Taiwan market, traffic, results, performance, money is everything"32. On February 1, Drug King and Da Fa DAFAA released the diss track "Yi Yi Chu Si", reaching 650,000 views in 19 hours on上架, topping the YouTube Music Hot List first32. The lyrics include sentences like "f*** your wife and f*** your whole family", treating women as tools to attack male opponents32.
On February 4, Whyte posted on Threads, taking a public stance for the first time:
✦ "For me, these two songs are full of traditional masculine culture, as a girl, I really can't like them."33
She added a paragraph:
✦ "You can continue to curse any swear words, no one can limit you, this is your 'freedom', your 'choice', and cursing swear words is almost always cursing a relatively weaker party."33
After being counter-attacked, she didn't retreat, but instead turned the opponent's counter-attack itself into evidence for her point:
✦ "If the core value of hip hop is rebellion and self-expression, then my expression of discomfort with sexual humiliation lyrics as a girl, receiving so many counter-attacks and more humiliation towards women, I know I am doing the right thing."25
Standing on the same side with her were fellow Golden Melody Best Male Artist Doggy and Mandarin R&B singer Karencici, but the two focused on the commercial questioning of "traffic vs. creation", not the gender issue itself. Doggy wrote on IG stories: "How much you can earn from works and performances themselves is what is truly worth showing off."25 Karencici wrote: "Numbers are fake, the feeling music brings to people is real."25
The strongest female counter-attacker in the debate was rapper Yang Shuya, who came from the NTU Hip Hop Research Society. On February 12, she released "Rule Man Freestyle", topping the StreetVoice General Chart on the same day, breaking 100,000 views on YouTube within 24 hours25. The lyrics include "Real is not your fig leaf for misogyny, so I come to rule, govern your kind of attitude", "Not hip hop, just hip hop chauvinism", "Men's words of respecting women, like budget unified deletion discount". Critics Ma Shifang, writer Huang Liqun, and Li Pingyao publicly reposted, and legislator Huang Jie left the three words "Respect!" on social media25. "Rule Man Freestyle" was later nominated for Best Hip Hop Song at the 2025 Golden Indie Music Awards.
When Whyte reposted Yang Shuya's new song, she added:
✦ "Talking about gender and the voice of the oppressed can also be a very hip hop thing."25
The peak of the debate lasted about three weeks, but the structural follow-up extended to the end of the year. Jazz vibraphonist Debby Wang Siya gathered 11 female musicians and writers in mid-2025, initiating the "Sheflow" project, creating a cross-gender inclusive space in the form of performances plus workshops, with a live session lineup including Yang Shuya, RapShark, and Debby Wang herself arranging and playing the vibraphone34. Blow Music's 2025 Year-in-Review listed this debate as one of the representative events of Taiwan music that year.
📝 Curator's Note
A female singer who just released an album on Sony, won the Golden Indie Award, and just handed over her third album to herself as producer, publicly criticizes peers' works. This is uncommon in the Taiwan hip hop circle, because the unspoken rule of this circle is that everyone does not step on each other. She is not a core member of the hip hop circle (her main works are lo-fi R&B / bedroom pop / jazz), but as a Golden Melody Newcomer female creator, she chose to stand on that line. The more opponents counter-attack her, the more she knows she is doing the right thing. This is the reaction method she learned from the teacher who told her "you cannot talk about periods" in elementary school and has practiced until now.
Salt Frequency: That Night on 2025-12-28
Pulling this line of opposition to the scene, it is the Zepp New Taipei on December 28, 2025. She held the Whyte 2025 Live Concert Boundary special there, performing for the first time in the form of a "female band"29.
In an interview with Blow Music before the performance, she previewed what she wanted to do:
✦ "In these few years, I have contacted a lot of mind-body-spirit things, so I will add chanting components, focusing on the arrangement of calm frequencies, and also a little bit of rock flavor, followed by everyone's familiar Chill Hop, Neo Soul."12
✦ "I hope to create a performance that sings from my heart, expresses sincerely, and can transmit energy, on the premise that I cannot be too tired, too energy-consuming, this is also what I have been practicing."12
In an interview with Zheng Yinong in early 2024, she explained how she views the artist identity of "Whyte"[^40]:
✦ "He is a girl wearing glasses and a hat, this character. I take off the glasses and the hat, actually I am fundamentally two people. But everyone is helping this person, he is building an image, letting those who may need healing get some help."35
In the same interview, Zheng Yinong asked her, "After realizing that you can control everything yourself, will you be more tired?" She answered[^40]:
✦ "At first, besides being tired, there was also fear... At first, you might feel that because you don't know what you want, when you communicate, people don't know what you want either. Then you feel that people seem to want to listen to them, or... just like you are wrong. But slowly, through a little bit of practice, I feel you will become more confident. It is a process of becoming confident, you are more sure who you are. But when communicating, you feel that he seems very fierce, but you are no longer afraid."35
Her interpretation of her own creation was also explained in the same interview:
✦ "My own interpretation is, I seem to create many rooms, everyone can come in and lie down comfortably inside. This is my definition of my works."35
As of April 2026, there were no formal music reviews landing on the internet for the concert on December 28, and the setlist of the performance was not formally organized. What can be determined is: it was a night where she put together the things she slowly learned in the past two years—salt frequency, chanting, Neo Soul, female band—on one stage after pressing the third and fourth pause buttons.
📝 Curator's Note
"Calm frequency arrangement", "cannot be too tired, too energy-consuming" these phrases are worth reading in the context of Taiwan's late 2020s pop music. These sentences sound like technical descriptions, but behind them is actually a 31-year-old person who just learned to say "I don't want this", designing requirements for her own stage. This line is同源 with her elementary school "cannot talk about periods", from Hsinchu Girls' High School "studying to not be seen as a girl". After pressing the pause button, what she is doing has exceeded picking songs and choosing producers; she is redefining "what performance energy should look like".
She Didn't Really Close That Door
In 2026, she is still releasing songs, still performing, still sending cold emails herself. She did not completely give up her physician qualification, she said "might go back in 3 to 6 years"22. She didn't completely close that door.
From "the girl whose father filled out the application" to "the producer who sends hundreds of emails to strange foreign musicians", these are two ends of the same person. The most critical moment in between happened at the student meeting in her junior year: the second she sat without speaking, suddenly realized she had always been at school. She didn't drop out to travel the world, didn't go shoot a documentary, didn't go write a book. She went to a coffee shop to make drinks, went to a cake shop to cut desserts, went to a recording studio to buy bento boxes. In that recording studio corner, she met Teacher Li Qixian. In the following years, she wrote "Insomnia", "Seh Ah Seh", "Cazzo".
She never loudly said "why I want to write songs". She only said one sentence:
✦ "I must properly face my own feelings, must find a way to take care of the child in my heart."36
During those years as a medical student, she was on duty in the ward, her energy was chaotic, and she relied on writing songs to drain those emotions15. She didn't "abandon medicine for literature", she used one path to catch the things that the other path couldn't give her.
When she said "please don't be afraid" to the audience at the Golden Melody Awards, many people probably couldn't do it. Taiwan's honor student track is too stable, pressing the pause button looks too risky. The whole system hides the pause button very deep, finding it, pressing it, and then bearing the misunderstanding of family and friends for the next few years, this is something that requires strength. She did it. Then she didn't go back to be a doctor. Then she didn't treat music as a career to manage, she said she just wants to keep writing songs.
"I have become the Japanese low-desire generation, I just hope I can keep writing songs."36
