Hebe Tien: The Singer Who Dropped the Idol System Piece by Piece After S.H.E's Multi-Million Sales

When Hebe Tien released her first solo album 'To Hebe' in September 2010, the poster copy read 'Super Newcomer After Ten Years Debut'—by then, S.H.E had already sold over ten million records. Eleven years later, on stage at the 32nd Golden Melody Awards, she told her mother, 'Mom, I didn't waste the water bill, I got the Golden Melody Award.' From a Hakka small town in Hsinchu to the stage of the Taipei Small Giant Stadium, this idol cultivated by HIM International Music spent twenty-five years actively shedding endorsements, variety shows, the Chinese market, and the 'literary queen' label.

30-Second Overview: Hebe Tien (born 1983, Hakka from Hsinchu) is a rare "active withdrawer" in the history of Mandarin pop music. In 2001, she formed S.H.E with Selina Ren and Ella Chen, selling over ten million records within a decade1. In 2010, she released her first solo album To Hebe, with the poster reading "Super Newcomer After Ten Years Debut"2. From "Angel in the Devil" and "A Little Happiness" to the 2020 album Unknown (collaborated with [Chien-Pai Chen](/people/Chien-Pai Chen)), which won the Best Mandarin Female Singer at the 32nd Golden Melody Awards3—her sales records have been steady from album to album. But in 2020, she declined a Chinese variety show offer rumored to be worth nearly 100 million NTD4; in 2022, she posted a photo of spaghetti on IG5; in 2025, she held her tour in salt fields and airfields without roofs6; in 2026, she told reporters, "It's not a hurdle, but I 'don't want to step' on it"7. An idol cultivated by the idol industry returned the things the industry gave her, piece by piece.

The Hakka Girl in the Bathroom, Twenty Years Later on the Golden Melody Stage

On the evening of August 21, 2021, at the Taipei Small Giant Stadium, the 32nd Golden Melody Awards ceremony was taking place.

Hebe Tien walked onto the stage to accept the Best Mandarin Female Singer award. She told herself, "I am someone who has climbed Hundred-Meter Peaks, but climbing these stairs made my legs go soft." Then she spoke to the camera:

"The microphone is my tree hollow, allowing me to sing into the songs the unknown, unspeakable thoughts, so I can pour them out. In these difficult times, I wish everyone well. Everyone has their own difficulties; I hope everyone can find their own tree hollow, with peace of mind and body, and everything is well."8

Then she added a meme: "Mom, I didn't waste the water bill, I got the Golden Melody Award."9

Only those who saw her childhood can understand this joke. Born in 1983 into a Hakka family in Hsinchu, Taiwan10, young Hebe loved hiding in the bathroom to open her throat and sing loudly, with her mom calling from outside the door, "Are you done washing?" Thirty-eight years later, standing on the Small Giant Stadium stage, she shouted to her mom, "I didn't waste the water bill." This meme condenses her entire life into one sentence: a girl from a Hakka small town's bathroom ultimately became a female singer in Mandarin pop music.

📝 Curator's Note
The line from the bathroom to the Golden Melody Awards is dramatic enough. But this article wants to write about the choices she made after reaching the Golden Melody stage: declining a Chinese variety show offer of nearly 100 million NTD4, declining invitations from Sisters Who Make Waves for consecutive years7, moving concerts to salt fields without air conditioning6. A person successfully cultivated by the system turned around and returned the things the system gave her, piece by piece.

Ten Years After Debut, Only Then Released the First Solo Album

In 2000, Hebe Tien participated in the "Universe 2000 Real Beauty Girl Battle" hosted by Universe Records, the predecessor of HIM International Music, in Hsinchu. During the finals, she sang Fiona Fok's "Like You," forgot the lyrics halfway through, and lost first place11.

But she didn't lose. After the competition, the record company put her together with Selina Ren and Ella Chen to form the trio S.H.E. On September 11, 2001, they released their first album Girls' Dorm12. The three had distinct positions: Selina was gentle, Ella was courageous, and Hebe was confident, with green as their representative color. Over the next ten years, S.H.E released 13 albums, with total sales exceeding 10 million copies1. They were the representative female group of Mandarin pop music from 2001 to 2010. You can refer to the broken idol group production line in [Taiwan's New Idol Generation](/culture/Taiwan's New Idol Generation) to understand the weight of S.H.E in that era.

📝 Curator's Note
Female singers of Hebe Tien's generation rarely had something called a "solo album." She was one voice, one face, one color of S.H.E. Releasing 13 albums in ten years and selling over ten million copies, the company had no reason to make her go solo. The risk of a solo album was breaking up this profitable three-part harmony.

In 2010, things changed. On October 22, Selina was severely burned in a blast scene while filming Meet Myself Lucky in Shanghai, with 54% of her body, nearly 80% being third-degree burns13. S.H.E's entertainment activities were suspended entirely.

In that same autumn, on September 3, Hebe Tien released her first solo studio album To Hebe, with the poster copy reading "Super Newcomer After Ten Years Debut"2. In mid-August, the record company released the lead single "Lonely, Lonely Just Fine" on YouTube, showing only the voice, not the face2.

The strategy of "voice first, face later" was itself an active dismantling of the "face" by an idol from S.H.E. She had been debuting for ten years, but she re-debuted as a "singer" rather than an "idol."

On the other side that autumn, 89 days after Selina's burn, she was hospitalized. According to later accounts, Hebe visited too frequently, and Selina's family "simply stopped recording her visits"14. During a certain rehabilitation period after Selina's burn, her mindset became twisted, "hating everyone around her," even refusing to see her father. It was a sentence from Hebe that pulled her back:

"There are no 100-point parents in the world."14

The relationship between the three S.H.E members emerged from the firelight of that year, becoming the most low-key but most understood part of their public appearances in the following decade-plus.

From "Angel in the Devil" to _Unknown_: The Ten Years After Solo

2011 was a year where the firelight of S.H.E had not yet dissipated. In September, Hebe Tien released her second solo album My Love, with the lead single "Angel in the Devil" composed by Hsiao-Hsia Chen and lyricized by Jo-Yung Yao15. This song became her first phenomenal work after going solo, and a female singer's voice positioning between sweetness and coldness began to take shape from this song. On October 31 of the same year, six months after being discharged, Selina married her lawyer boyfriend, Chang Cheng-Chung. Hebe Tien and Ella served as bridesmaids and sang together16. The experiences of the three girls during the 89-day hospitalization were rarely discussed in detail in their subsequent joint appearances over the next ten-plus years, but every time they reunited, everyone could read it.

In the following years, she released an album every two to three years, pushing that voice positioning one layer deeper inward each time. In November 2013, [Small] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BClZoVLwZCE) borrowed the title from Wisława Szymborska's poem Under One Little Star. From this album, [Chien-Pai Chen](/people/Chien-Pai Chen) became her fixed producer17. In 2015, she lent her voice to the movie My Girl for the song "A Little Happiness," and this MV became the first Mandarin single to break 100 million views on YouTube in August of the following year18. In July 2016, [Daily Life] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dBFK2fHjWg) was released, with pure handmade packaging and special fluorescent ink; that year, the If Tour Concert PLUS held three consecutive shows at the Small Giant Stadium, with a three-day box office of 82.5 million NTD19. Her sales records have been steady from album to album.

What happened in October 2018 looked like business news, but essentially it was the step where she took back the initiative. Her contract with HIM expired, and she established her own "Le Lai Le Hao Co., Ltd." to handle personal affairs20; in the same year, Chien-Pai Chen established "Why Not Music" (Pourquoi Pas Music) as Music Director, responsible for the production side21. From then on, the dual-track structure of Hebe Tien's personal company plus Why Not Music production was formed, continuing until the next album.

That album was Unknown (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtH0BAbUalk), released in September 2020, nominated for 7 items at the 32nd Golden Melody Awards22. On August 21, 2021, the results came out: Hebe Tien won the Best Mandarin Female Singer Award, Ge Da-Wei won the Best Lyricist Award, and Chien-Pai Chen finally won the award after his seventh nomination as a producer3. Three awards falling on the same album was the night the term "Tian Style" was officially recognized by the market.

Chien-Pai Chen later described his working philosophy with Hebe Tien in an interview:

"Is imperfection a form of emotional expression? Can imperfection also be a form of emotional expression? Obviously, she agreed."23

This is the innermost line of the "Tian Style": not smoothing out, not polishing, leaving breath, leaving roughness, leaving the temperature of the moment. Since the 2013 album Small, Chien-Pai Chen polished out, note by note, a singer's voice that allows for imperfection.

Hebe Tien's response to the matter of "imperfection" is more direct. During the Yi Yi tour, she accepted an interview with BIOS monthly. When asked how she uses vocal imperfections, she said:

"How to use imperfection? There's no need to use it at all; I am inherently a person full of imperfections."24

📝 Curator's Note
The producer said, "She agrees that imperfection is a form of emotional expression," and the person herself said, "I am inherently a person full of imperfections." These two sentences are actually the same thing, just expressed from completely different positions: Chien-Pai Chen clarified this philosophy from the production side, while Hebe Tien caught it from the existential side. The term "Tian Style" looks like a product of the producer's perspective to outsiders, but to the person herself, it is "no need to use, I am inherently so."

In the same interview, Chien-Pai Chen described the contrast he felt when he first met Hebe Tien: he thought she was cold and distant, but "she actually has a very bold laugh and speaks very directly"23. Her band's Band Leader, A-Gun, put it more bluntly: "Hebe is just a person with a poker face but a surging heart inside. When she finds something interesting, she laughs inside until she explodes, but she won't show it immediately. She has a step."23

The relationship between these details and the "Literary Queen" label is interesting: the label is given by the market, but the person herself actually laughs loudly.

A Choice Question Worth 100 Million

In 2020, the Chinese variety show The Voice of China Dream: Our Song invited her twice. According to media reports from that year, the conditions were 8.5 million NTD per episode, with a 12-episode contract amount approaching 102 million, plus private jet transportation4.

She didn't go.

In that year, many female singers of the same generation chose the opposite direction. In 2021, Rainie Yang participated in the second season of Sisters Who Make Waves, forming a 7-member group to debut and being seen again by the Chinese market25. In mid-2025, Jolin Tsai consecutively participated in the Chinese variety show Da Ge 2025 and attended the New Year's Eve galas of multiple satellite TV stations26. In the latter half of their careers, they found a second curve in the Chinese market. This is the most common script for female singers of this generation in Mandarin.

Hebe Tien is not on this script.

📝 Curator's Note
The fact that "she doesn't go to China" was only a passive choice not widely discussed in 2020. What made this choice a public event was a photo of spaghetti two years later.

A Plate of Spaghetti, Losing Two Million Followers

On August 2, 2022, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan. On that day, Hebe Tien posted a photo of eating spaghetti on her IG Stories with the caption:

"No need to force a smile; wake up from a nap and your face is already swollen. For the 'fake strong' women, here is a photo of a female star endorsing how delicious spaghetti is to win back a city."5

Chinese netizens, due to Pelosi's Italian heritage, interpreted this spaghetti photo as supporting Pelosi and supporting Taiwan independence. Her songs were taken down from Chinese music platforms, and she lost over 2 million followers on Weibo5. Her old song Island from 2010 was pointed out as having the meaning of Taiwan independence due to the lyrics "separated by a sea, not disturbing each other" and "I think this distance is very good," becoming the most pointed-out song in the takedown list27.

In April 2024, she was originally scheduled to appear at the Tianjin Paopao Island Music Festival on May 2 as the closing act. Chinese netizens attacked again. On April 27, under public opinion pressure, the organizer announced the cancellation of Hebe Tien's performance. She responded with two words: "Very regrettable"28.

After that spaghetti incident in 2022, she did not apologize, did not explain, did not regret. Two years after the incident, in an interview, when a reporter asked her, "Are you feeling okay lately? Do you want to drink a couple more cups?" she answered: "Are you talking about the earthquake? Whether there are many things or few, I quite like drinking a couple of cups."29 She didn't take the spaghetti topic, pushing the question to the other side.

⚠️ Gray Area
"Chinese boycott" and "her own refusal of variety shows" are two things of different natures: the former is passive endurance, the latter is an active choice. But the time overlap of these two things on Hebe Tien is easily combined into a tragic narrative: "She was forced out of the big stage." Her true state is closer to the opposite. Before the 2022 spaghetti incident, she was already a singer rare in the Mandarin music scene who didn't take endorsements, didn't go on variety shows, and didn't appear on programs; the refusal of that nearly 100 million NTD deal in 2020 was already in front4. The closing of the Chinese market accelerated the sealing of this already chosen path, it didn't leave her with no way out.

New Talk columnist Guan Renjian called this process "not kneeling, not licking." Many female singers of the same generation chose to go to China to shoot dramas, appear on variety shows, and sign with Chinese management companies; Hebe Tien did not28.

And 2022 was actually her year of disasters: besides the spaghetti, her originally scheduled Yi Yi concert in Kaohsiung was also canceled due to an earthquake, and was only made up in the 2025 outdoor venue at Weiwuying30.

Salt Fields, Brick Kilns, Airfields: The _Tian Diao_ of 2025

From May to June 2025, Hebe Tien did the most "not like a big singer" tour of her career: Tian Diao Live in Life Wild Tour6.

The tour's first stop was at the Well Foot Tile Salt Fields in Beimen, Tainan, for two shows on May 17–18. Director Liu Po-Chun's design concept was "to preserve the sense of extension of the salt field and salt mountain reflections, and the enveloping sense of heaven and earth"31. For the sunset moment of Sun Suspension, he deliberately delayed the start time by 10 minutes. The sunset on the first day was originally covered by clouds; halfway through the chorus, the sun slowly emerged from the clouds. Liu Po-Chun used one word to describe that moment in an interview: "Super crazy"31.

She then sang into the thermal airfield at Emerald Bay, Wanli, New Taipei, and the Lianfu Brick Kiln in Hengchun, Pingtung—inside the brick kiln cave, she collaborated with the "Cao Fei Fire Fake Fire Atelier" team, with flame light tube installations bursting out of the cave entrance31. The Kaohsiung Weiwuying Outdoor Theater show made up for the Yi Yi concert canceled due to the earthquake in 202230.

But the most dramatic scene happened at the Huxiao Shanlan Airfield in Puli, Nantou, at an altitude of 600 meters. The director originally set the paraglider to fly into the sky for the third song Utopia, but that day the wind suddenly picked up, and the instructor had to take off early. The paraglider just happened to suspend into the air during the song "What, Where," and the control room staff "were all moved, shouting and cheering"31.

Five locations, ten shows attracted over 20,000 audiences6. Liu Po-Chun described Hebe Tien in an interview:

"Fuzhen is very real and very disciplined, very free and sincere during performances, but at the same time, the singing is professional enough. Few artists can do both at the same time. To look so calm must be the result of very hard work."31

📝 Curator's Note
A singer who can continuously book five shows at the Small Giant Stadium chose to hold her tour in places without air conditioning, without roofs, and without comfortable audience seats: this is the rarest choice in 2025 Mandarin pop music. The commonality of salt fields, brick kilns, and airfields is "uncontrollable": weather, sunset, wind direction, land. She turned the concert from a "fully controlled industrial product" into a "negotiated present event with the environment." This is the same aesthetic on different surfaces as Chien-Pai Chen talking about her "imperfection is also emotional expression" and her own saying "I am inherently a person full of imperfections."

"Not a hurdle, but I 'don't want to step'"

March 30, 2026, was Hebe Tien's 43rd birthday. The three S.H.E members appeared together in a live broadcast. On her birthday, she announced that her sixth solo album "Six Treasures Successfully Implanted" would be released within the year (this news came from media reports)32.

Two weeks later, on April 14, 2026, at a brand endorsement event, she responded for the first time face-to-face for why she always declined the Chinese variety show Wind 2026 (part of the Sisters Who Make Waves series):

"It's not a hurdle, but I 'don't want to step' on it. I like lightness and freedom, a bit more relaxed and comfortable."7

She said this when she was 43 years old. Many female singers of the same generation were seen again by the Chinese market on the Sisters Who Make Waves stage series, revived by this series, and earned high income in the latter half of their careers25. Her reason for declining this step is also clear: she can walk, but she "doesn't want to step."

📝 Curator's Note
At a concert in April 2024, she joked: "Here I want to help Hakka people tear off the stingy label, because Teacher Luo Wen-Yu is so generous, and S.H.E has another Hakka person, Ella, so here we can clear the Hakka stereotype, we are indeed a bit more frugal."33 The Hakka identity is something she doesn't emphasize publicly but occasionally makes fun of herself about. She didn't use the "Hakka female singer" as a marketing label, but this identity occasionally surfaces in her descriptions of herself.

The Person Who Dropped the Idol System

From September 11, 2001, S.H.E's Girls' Dorm to April 14, 2026, "don't want to step," twenty-five years have passed.

The Hakka girl who sang in the Hsinchu bathroom and was called by her mom "Are you done washing?" has a long list of things she shed in these twenty-five years. In 2017, she took on 11 endorsements in a whole year, with a net worth breaking 100 million; that is what happens most in the latter half of the career of female singers of the same generation; within a few years, the Chinese market closed, and those endorsements almost cleared to zero34. In 2020, the Chinese variety show offered 8.5 million per episode, a 12-episode contract of nearly 100 million plus private jet, she didn't go4. The Sisters Who Make Waves series invited her for consecutive years, she also didn't go7. For 16 years after going solo, she didn't take any drama or movie offers, except for lending her voice to the movie My Girl for the song "A Little Happiness"10. Finally, even the choice of continuously booking five shows at the Small Giant Stadium, she dropped it, replacing it with salt fields without air conditioning, brick kilns without roofs, and airfields relying on heaven's weather6.

But she didn't quit singing.

What she kept is the breath-filled voice polished out with [Chien-Pai Chen](/people/Chien-Pai Chen) for over ten years, the obsession with the "present" by moving concerts to salt fields and brick kilns, and the ability to shrink herself back to the size of a small-town girl by shouting to her mom on the Golden Melody Awards stage, "I didn't waste the water bill."

She said a sentence to Women's Daily:

"Normal mind is not about being calm; people have anger, disappointment, frustration, optimism, happiness, extreme joy turning into sorrow, or finding joy in bitterness. I think normal mind is allowing all emotions and feelings to happen, rather than being indifferent to everything."35

Hebe Tien's choices over these twenty-five years may use the three words "normal mind" to define in reverse what a "star" is. A star's job is to smooth out all emotions, pack all contrasts into PR talk, and catch every opportunity. What she did is exactly the opposite: she allows emotions, allows not catching, allows withdrawing, allows "not wanting to step."

Will the sixth album come out this year? In 2025, she already sang at salt fields, brick kilns, and an airfield at 600 meters altitude. Where does she want to stand next? She didn't answer this question, but her entire twenty-five-year choice is the answer: she wants to stand in a place no one decided for her.
