Janet Chia: The Taiwanese Experiment of Converting Celebrity Social Capital into Public Mobilization Power, Again and Again

From her debut in the 2000 CTV 8 PM drama, to raising NT$68.04 million in two days in 2021 to secure 252 HFNC units for frontline hospitals, to becoming the 6th Chairman of Taipei 101 in 2024, and finally on January 25, 2026, enabling Alex Honnold's live-streamed free solo climb of the 508-meter Taipei 101—Janet Chia has forged a path with no precedent in Taiwan: repeatedly converting celebrity social capital into public mobilization power. Each step forward is accompanied by an equal amount of skepticism, answered only by the next larger mobilization.

30-Second Overview: Most people only know one version of her: the variety show host of the 2000s, the grassroots mobilizer who raised NT$68.04 million in two days in 2021 to secure HFNC units for frontline hospitals, or the public share governor who became the 6th Chairman of Taipei 101 in 2024. Only by connecting these events do we discover a path with no precedent in Taiwan: using "celebrity social capital" to repeatedly redeem "public mobilization power," and then exchanging that mobilization power for "public share governance seats." Each step forward is accompanied by an equal amount of skepticism (Mother of Cadaver Skin, misuse of public instruments, improper dismissal of employees, superficial and vain, funeral-style exhibition layout). Her response is always the next larger mobilization. From the 2000 CTV 8 PM drama to January 25, 2026, when Alex Honnold free-solo climbed the 508-meter Taipei 101 in a global live stream, this cycle has run for twenty-six years.

The Forgotten Surname

Her actual name is Chia Yung-chien (賈永媫). "Jien" is an archaic character that many computers cannot select, so except for official documents, she always uses the widely recognized character "Jie" (婕). 1

Tracing back three generations reveals even more obscure history: her father, Chia Ta-chun (賈大駿), was a Colonel in the Republic of China Navy; her great-grandfather, Chia Te-yun (賈德潤), served as Director of the Suiyuan Political Affairs Office, County Magistrate of Huaiyang County, Henan Province, and Administrative Chief of the Second District of Eastern Henan, and died in the line of duty suppressing bandits while serving as a local official. 23 Her great-uncle was Chia Te-yao (賈德耀)—the Premier of the Beiyang Government who briefly held power for sixty-four days (February 15 to April 20) in the storm of the March 18 Massacre of 1926. 2

This family lineage completely disappears in most entertainment reports because it does not serve the "girl-next-door beauty" persona. However, it may explain why, when facing public sectors like the Presidential Office, Ministry of Health and Welfare, and Taipei City Government, she never exhibited the discomfort typical of other entertainers.

At age 47, she learned from her father that her grandfather and father were not biologically related—her grandfather and older brother had been adopted by her second uncle, Chia Te-mao (賈德懋), and third uncle, Chia Te-yao (賈德耀), and the family cared for them as their own. 43

"I Am Proud to Be the Second Generation of外省 (Mainland Exiles) and the First Generation of Taiwanese"

This family history resurfaced in February 2026. Following the G-Dragon exhibition controversy and the Honnold climbing incident, Janet Chia publicly responded to her great-uncle's Beiyang Government background for the first time. She did not deny it, nor did she cut ties with it. She retold this lineage:

"I am proud to be the second generation of Mainland Exiles and the first generation of Taiwanese. Love has allowed us to take root in Taiwan. The great rivers and seas of the past surged and flowed in the chaos of war and migration; and ultimately, converged in Taiwan." 3

This statement is significant because it shifts the family narrative from "the great-uncle's official title" back to the more fundamental question of "how the father's generation arrived in Taiwan." For Taiwan in 2026, the self-identity of "Second Generation of Mainland Exiles, First Generation of Taiwanese" is rapidly disappearing—most adult children of that generation's Mainland Exile families now define themselves as "Taiwanese," but few articulate that line drifting from the great rivers and seas of China so explicitly and cleanly.

She then explained: Her great-grandfather, Chia Te-yun, died in the line of duty suppressing bandits, leaving young children to be adopted by uncles; her father was also a stepson treated as his own by his grandfather. She said, "Love needs no distinctions." 4

The timing of this clarification was not random—it came after she had sat in the Chairman's chair at 101 for a year and a half and had just handed over the global climbing live stream. She was using the position she had secured in "this generation" to look back and organize "where I came from."

From Anchor to Artist, Classified by the Market

She graduated from the Department of Communication at Coventry University in the UK. In 2000, she debuted in the CTV 8 PM drama Good Luck and Happiness Every Year (吉祥如意年年來) playing Xin Lian (心蓮), serving simultaneously as an anchor for CTV's Morning News 5—she was an anchor first, before the market classified her as an artist.

Her subsequent hosting credits span Giga Media, CTV, and Formosa TV, with her representative work being Giga Comprehensive TV's Entertainment Late Call (娛樂晚點名). 6 In 2002, she married Wang Chao-chieh (王兆杰), son of Wang Ming-te, Chairman of De杰 Group (德傑集團), and they had two daughters and one son. In 2004, before the industry standard curve of "artists being eliminated by the market at forty," she founded CH Wedding Classic Wedding Dresses at age thirty, shifting gears first. CH Wedding has been operating for over twenty years. 67

The true origin of the title "120% Beauty Girl" (120% 美少女) stems from a phone call Tsai Ing-wen made to her in 2021—this matter must be placed under the HFNC fundraising section to be understood clearly.

2015: Scolded Twice, Learned Twice

2015 deserves its own section.

After the Bixi Land Color Party Fire, on July 1, she called on Facebook to rename the "cadaver skin" used to treat burn victims, arguing it was "a very great thing donated by whole-body organ donors, leaving love in the world." The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced on July 3 that it would be renamed "cadaver skin" (大體皮膚). However, the medical professional circle questioned whether this was laypeople leading experts, and she was sarcastically dubbed the "Mother of Cadaver Skin," apologizing on July 4. 89

This event has almost disappeared from her biographical reports since the 2021 HFNC donation. But it remains as a foreshadowing: one of the reasons she later learned to "confirm professional needs first, then act" was that apology.

That same year, she and her husband Wang Chao-chieh formed "Team Taiwan," completing "Arch to Arc"—running from the Marble Arch in London to Dover, swimming across the English Channel, and cycling from Calais to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, covering the entire distance in 43 hours and 58 minutes. She also became the first Taiwanese woman to swim across the English Channel, raising NT$2.12 million for the Taitung Book House. 1011

Two Days, NT$68.04 Million, 252 Units

In May 2021, Taiwan's local COVID-19 outbreak erupted. She initially only delivered meals, but later learned through friends that hospitals truly needed High-Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) full systems—one unit costs about NT$270,000, and public hospitals following procurement processes simply could not keep up. 12

She first called her husband Wang Chao-chieh, who immediately decided to lead by donating; then she made call after call to her business circle friends, each of whom participated enthusiastically without refusing. Within two days, she raised NT$68.04 million, procured 252 HFNC units, and the final total number of units from the private sector expanded to 342, all delivered to frontline hospitals. 1213 The Ministry of Health and Welfare subsequently urgently procured 550 HFNC units, delivering them to 97 hospitals across Taiwan. 14

Then-President Tsai Ing-wen called to express gratitude. Janet Chia was busy delivering meals and hung up the Presidential Office spokesperson's phone three times. When she finally picked up, Tsai Ing-wen later posted their conversation on Instagram:

"Yung-chien, I can 100% prove your passion, and I can 120% more prove that you are a #BeautyGirl." 15

The internet meme "120% Beauty Girl" originates here, connecting to the same line as the "Beauty Girl" title in the entertainment industry twenty years prior. She established the "Taiwan Janet Chia Beauty Girl Charity Association" the following year to continue fundraising work. In the association's first year (2022), it raised over NT$42.08 million, donating all of it, and currently promotes art therapy and play therapy for the mental care of children and youth in remote areas. 1016

📝 Curator's Note
The ability to "dare to call and raise NT$68.04 million in two days" was not an overnight enlightenment. It was ten years of practice—the English Channel taught lung capacity, and the 2015 cadaver skin incident's apology taught preparation before action. Together, these formed the mobilization power of 2021.

One Chairman's Chair, 70% Public Share Influence

On September 3, 2024, she assumed the role of the 6th Chairman of Taipei Financial Center Corporation (Taipei 101), approved by the Executive Yuan, succeeding Chang Hsueh-shun. 1718

To understand the significance of her taking this position, one must first look at the shareholding structure: Japanese firm Itochu is the largest single shareholder (holding approximately 32-37%), the Central Securities Depository and Clearing Corporation (TAIFX) manages the Zhonglian Trust at about 15%, Chunghwa Telecom holds about 12%, and Mega Financial Holdings, the Taiwan Stock Exchange, and China CITIC Financial Holdings each hold 5-8%. Pan-public shares total approximately 52%, with private shares at 48%—the Ministry of Finance does not hold shares directly, but the influence of pan-public shares reaches 70%. 19 Successive Chairmen have played the role of "public-facing quasi-spiritual indicators," with daily operations managed by the General Manager. 20

In other words, the 101 Chairman position is a role sustained by networks, brand, and mobilization power. The Ministry of Finance confirmed the reason for approval was "positive image, complete academic and professional background, and excellent performance in fashion, marketing, and management." 21 From the experience of mobilizing the business sector for HFNC fundraising, the logic of selecting for this position is traceable.

However, less than three months after taking office, three controversies exploded in succession.

On November 19, 2024, Wang Chao-chieh, riding the wave of the World Baseball 12 Softball Classic Taiwan team advancing to the Tokyo playoffs, lit up the 101 exterior wall with the text "Taiwan is Brave," "Advance to Tokyo," "TAIWAN NO.1," and "De杰 Group, Yung-chien United" (德傑集團 永婕同心)—the line "De杰 Group, Yung-chien United" was questioned as misuse of public instruments for private gain,不符合 the internal rule that 101 lighting must have public welfare characteristics. 22 At the same time, she was exposed for improperly dismissing the former Chairman's secretary, with former Chairman Song Wen-chi publicly criticizing Janet Chia as "superficial and vain." 23

On November 27, 2024, Janet Chia went live for two hours to clarify in person, tears falling: the lighting was approved by the Board of Directors; "De杰 Group, Yung-chien United" is the company slogan; the dismissal of the employee was done through communication and agreement, following the Labor Standards Act for severance, and providing severance pay superior to legal requirements. 23 She thanked ten enterprises that supported her during the crisis while wiping away tears—this image later became the representative scene of the controversy surrounding her identity as a public share Chairman.

On July 17, 2025, the G-Dragon Media Exhibition: Übermensch opened at 101. The layout was chaotic, merchandise sold out, and the on-site decor was described by netizens as resembling a "funeral hall." Janet Chia apologized twice, emphasizing that "the exhibition design was original by Galaxy Corporation and Korean MUT; Taiwan was merely a communication bridge with no final decision-making power." 24

These controversies remain on her chronology and should not be overlooked.

9:00 AM on January 25, 2026

American free solo climber Alex Honnold (protagonist of the documentary Free Solo, the one who free-solo climbed El Capitan) began climbing the exterior wall of Taipei 101 bare-handed at 9:00 AM on January 25, 2026. This was the live broadcast of Netflix's Free Solo Taipei 101: Live, broadcast simultaneously in 190 countries worldwide. 2526

This project was greenlit by Janet Chia. Originally scheduled for January 24, it was delayed by one day due to rain. She told the production team beforehand: January 26 (Monday) is the final deadline; if it rains again, the entire event will be canceled. 27

She changed all five flagpoles on the 101 roof (normally only one holds the National Flag, the other four are corporate flags) to Republic of China National Flags on the day of the live stream. She explained this on her Instagram Stories:

"I changed all of these to National Flags. No matter how you shoot, the whole world can see it!" 28

Her conversations with Honnold were also recorded in full. During a test climb in September 2025, she heard Honnold say "it should take about 90 minutes" and replied: "No, you need to slow down your speed! We have two hours show!" 29 On the day of the climb, Honnold reached the summit in 91 minutes, one full minute longer than promised. In the lounge, she complained:

"Didn't you promise to slow down?"
"I did!"
"My God! 1 minute! Giving us only 1 extra minute is really generous! God-like!" 29

After Honnold's summit, he personally thanked "Janet (Chia)" and Taipei 101 at the press conference. 30 Netflix announced global viewership of 6.2 million people and 12 million hours, ranking third on the Netflix Global English Program Weekly Chart and first on the Taiwan Chart. 31

There are also negative voices. BBC Chinese and Crossing (換日線) jointly raised five key questions questioning the "over-performance" and imitation risks of this live stream; The Guardian questioned the future of entertainment involving death-risk live streams. 32 Some comments pointed out that Honnold's appearance fee was essentially world-class exposure purchased by Taipei 101 using marketing budgets. 32 These doubts are the same curve's different nodes as the 2015 cadaver skin, the 2021 HFNC illegal reporting, the 2024 misuse of public instruments, and the 2025 G-Dragon exhibition funeral hall—every large-scale mobilization of public resources triggers the question "Why her?" and her response every time is to mobilize again on a larger scale.

In February 2023, she was reported to have been privately consulted by Lai Ching-te about his vice-presidential candidacy, which she directly denied: "It's too funny, I'm sitting at home and this news falls on my head. I don't want to run." 33 In October 2023, she was pictured with Lai Ching-te again, leaving comments like "I think they match well"; 34 a year and a half later, she took charge of 101—this is another way of answering the question "whether to run" with a public share governance seat.

Her trajectory has a consistent shape: find the link that only she can open, and open it. In 2004, it was CH Wedding's wedding dresses; in 2015, it was the English Channel; in 2021, it was HFNC; in 2024, it was 101; in 2026, it is the climber on the 508-meter skyscraper and the five flagpoles all changed to National Flags.

From the variety show host who debuted in 2000 relying on an 8 PM drama, to the one who in 2026 used Taipei's tallest building to broadcast a climbing history performance to the world. No one in Taiwan's past has walked the path of celebrity social capital to its end. She is questioned at every step, responding with the next mobilization.

What is truly worth remembering is perhaps that hour early in the morning when she had people climb to the roof, taking down the four corporate flags one by one and hanging up the four National Flags one by one.

The Complex Life Festival: Two Medical Students' 'Unsuccessful People's Forum' and a Generation's Five-Year Refusal to Say They Are Good Enough

In May 2016, Hsu Hao-ning posted a string of 'eighth-generation' (post-90s) 'people who make life exhausting' on Facebook, and together with classmate Huang Dou-ni (Huang Yen-lin) organized the first 'Unsuccessful People's Forum'. A TCM practitioner and a Western medicine doctor who later went to Harvard rewrote the previous generation's commercially co-opted 'simplicity' into 'complexity', allowing only discussions of growth, not success. Five years later, Hsu Hao-ning's soul remained in Taichung to open a bookstore and ran for city councilor but lost; his assistant looked back and called it 'Hao-ning's masterpiece, sealed here': Is 'unsuccessful' a humble term, or a self-expectation of a generation that is always just a little bit short?
